Lichfield Leisure Centre has achieved Swim England's Water Wellbeing accreditation for its work to make swimming more accessible and welcoming.
The national standard focuses on the experience offered to people who are inactive, disabled or living with long-term health conditions.
Lichfield District Council said the centre's work includes dementia-friendly swimming sessions and specialist training for swimming teachers and the wider leisure team.
Inclusive sessions at the centre
The centre's current term-time timetable lists dedicated sessions for a range of needs. These include long-term health condition swims on Mondays from 11am to 11.45am and Wednesdays from 3.15pm to 4pm.
A disability swim runs on Mondays from 1.15pm to 2.15pm, while a dementia-friendly open swim and lane session is scheduled on Fridays from 3.15pm to 4pm.
Swim England says its Water Wellbeing model asks accredited providers to create an accessible and inclusive environment, offer tailored opportunities in the water and show the impact of their work.
The accreditation process includes reviewing physical access, staff awareness and the customer experience. Providers then introduce tailored aquatic opportunities and gather evidence about the difference their programme makes.
The programme also encourages staff training so teams can better understand the barriers faced by people with long-term health conditions and impairments.
