Staffordshire County Council has completed walking and cycling improvements along Eastern Avenue in Lichfield near The Friary School. The scheme, which cost £400,000, was funded by HS2 as part of investment to encourage active travel in communities along the railway route.
What has been built
The improvements include a new shared-use cycleway and footway along the north side of Eastern Avenue near the school. The existing puffin crossing next to the school entrance has been upgraded to a toucan crossing, allowing both pedestrians and cyclists to cross safely.
An existing footpath linking Eastern Avenue and Grange Lane has also been improved for use as a shared footway and cycleway.
Council's aim
Daniel Cecil, Cabinet Support Member for Highways at Staffordshire County Council, said the scheme makes it easier and safer for people to walk and cycle for everyday journeys. He added that creating better links around The Friary School helps pupils, families and residents travel more actively and confidently, while supporting healthier lifestyles and reducing reliance on car travel.
