Lichfield District Council is inviting businesses and property owners to apply for grants of up to £30,000 to improve shopfronts in Lichfield City Centre Conservation Area. Expressions of Interest have opened for the £400,000 Heritage Shopfront Grant Scheme, which aims to enhance the city centre while protecting its historic character.
The scheme supports eligible improvements including restoring traditional shopfronts, reinstating original architectural features, replacing inappropriate modern additions, introducing heritage-appropriate signage and lighting, improving accessibility and carrying out high-quality external decoration.
Who Can Apply
The scheme is open to eligible freehold property owners, leaseholders with their landlord's consent, independent businesses, social enterprises and community-run businesses.

Councillor Richard Holland, Cabinet Member for High Street and Economic Development, said the scheme supports independent traders while preserving Lichfield's historic character. "Lichfield's distinctive character and independent businesses are a huge part of what makes our city centre such a special place," he said. "This scheme is a positive investment in its future."
The council encouraged applicants to consider projects of any scale, from full restorations to smaller improvements to signage, lighting or accessibility.
How to Apply
The application process has two stages, beginning with a short Expression of Interest. Applicants do not need detailed designs or full costings at the initial stage. Businesses and property owners must not begin any work before receiving written approval.
