Lichfield District Council has been shortlisted for a national award recognising its approach to creating lasting benefits for local communities. The council is a finalist in the Public Sector Leadership category at the 2026 Social Value Awards, which celebrate organisations that go above and beyond to make a positive difference through the services they deliver.
Through its 'Our Community Can' initiative, the council ensures that contracts awarded to businesses deliver more than just the work they are paid to do. By working with suppliers to provide additional funding, equipment, skills and practical support, the council has helped local schools, charities and community groups access resources they might otherwise struggle to afford.
£4 million in community benefits delivered
The approach has already helped deliver more than £4 million in social value, creating additional benefits for communities across the district. One example is the Community Wishing Well, which allows local organisations to request support and connects them with businesses and suppliers who can help.
This has resulted in a new teen hangout at Burntwood Park, £9,000 of gym equipment for a local school, and new bowls equipment for a local community centre, among other projects.
Investment in voluntary and community sector
The council's wider commitment to supporting communities is reflected in its largest-ever investment in the voluntary and community sector, with £1.17 million committed over three years to support organisations delivering vital services across the district.
Councillor Rob Strachan, Cabinet Member for Finance and Commissioning at Lichfield District Council, said: "We want Lichfield District to be a place where communities thrive, and we recognise that the council has an important role to play in making that happen.
"That's why we've been ambitious in our approach to social value. It's not just about getting the best deal for the council but making sure the decisions we take and the contracts we award create lasting opportunities for the people and places we serve.
"To have that approach recognised nationally is something we're incredibly proud of. It reflects the hard work of our teams and the fantastic partnerships we've built with businesses and community organisations across the district. There's already so much to celebrate, but we're determined to do even more."
The council is one of seven finalists for the Public Sector Leadership Award. Winners will be announced at the Social Value Conference in December.
