A free scheme has launched across Lichfield District to help people living with dementia or memory-related conditions get home safely if they become lost or confused.
Lichfield District Council says 2,000 devices are being made available free of charge to residents. The Find My Loved One scheme was launched at Grace Cares in Elmhurst Business Park, Lichfield, on Tuesday 1 September.
How the Find My Loved One scheme works
Participants can choose a wristband, lanyard or keyring fob containing a small near-field communication chip. If the wearer needs assistance, a member of the public or an emergency worker can tap the device with a smartphone.
The device can display information chosen by the participant or their carer, such as a preferred name, a short message explaining that the wearer may be confused, and an emergency contact number.
The council says the devices do not track a person's location, do not require charging and do not store information in a central system. Only the information placed on the device is shown.
Who can receive a free device?
The voluntary scheme is open to people living with dementia, Alzheimer's or related conditions, people who may be at risk of becoming confused or lost, and their families, carers and support networks.
Residents can sign up at Grace Cares, Unit 2, Elmhurst Business Park, Elmhurst, Lichfield, from 10am to 3pm on weekdays. Devices are also available through Lichfield District Council's reception at District Council House in Frog Lane from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday excluding bank holidays.
